Different Kinds of Goals

Types of Goals to Set Yourself

In this post I wanted to outline the different kinds of goals you can set for yourself. Well I say goals but honestly, it’s more: different kinds of things that you want to do.

I’ve broken them up into three categories:

Fun:

These are exactly what they sound like, the fun ones! The things you want to do, that you will do simply because they’re fun.

For example: watching a movie with friends, trying out a new ice cream place, getting a manicure.

These are the things that you want to do but maybe push to the side or don’t get around to doing because of something else. Setting one of these as a goal is a good way to guarantee that you’ll complete at least something from your list and adds to a sense of accomplishment.

Achievable:

This one is the next step up form Fun. The things that you’ve been meaning to do but somehow never get around to it.

For example: watching a documentary, reading a book (or a few chapters in a book), doing yoga once a week.

These are the things that aren’t that difficult per say but there is never a time dedication to doing it. They are, as the name states, achievable goals to set for yourself. Setting one of these as a goal, commits you to actually doing it. And because it isn’t that hard, you’ll be able to actually complete it.

Challenging:

This is, of course, the hardest kind of goal you can set yourself. The things you have to push yourself to do.

For example: going to the gym twice a week, waking up early, cooking new meals.

These are the things that are more difficult to do because it’s more of a push to yourself to get up and do them. They can also be part of a bigger, more long-term goal you’ve sent for yourself. For example, a weight loss goal can be broken up into smaller bits by going to the gym twice a week. Setting one of these goals pushes you to work towards something bigger, a long-term goal or a lifestyle change and motivates you to move towards it.

-.-.-

I think that it’s good to have a mixture of these all types so that your experience in working towards your goals is well balanced and achievable. As always, you should start small and work your way up, and having one of each of these types can help you not only accomplish but feel productive.

Overall, the main points are:
  •           Set different types of goals for a well-balanced experience
  •           Fun goals are the things you want to do
  •           Achievable goals are the things you mean to do
  •           Challenging goals are the things you have to push yourself to do
  •           When setting goals, it’s important to start small progressively work your way up

I have also made a post on Organization and Goals, which shows some ways to implement these goals and might help to add some context to this post.

I’ll leave the link here along with some other related links.

And with that, I would like to thank you for taking the time to read this post. I’d love to hear your thoughts, and I hope that you were able to learn something new from this!

I’ll see you in the next one :)
